Teacher Signs Contract

HYDE PARK - Veteran social studies teacher Wayne Nadeau has signed the
contract offered him to teach at the Lamoille Union campus in Hyde Park.
The contract was offered as a result of arbitration and an arbiter's
decision following his appeal of his dismissal over allegations of
misconduct on a 1996 school trip to Russia. After the arbiter's
decision, Superintendent Terry Bailey immediately reinstated Nadeau and
sent him a contract for the current school year, just beginning.
Nadeau signed the contract Friday, August 20, several days before the
August 24 deadline to accept the contract.
Nadeau, accompanied by a fellow teacher, met for about 90 minutes Friday
with Superintendent Bailey, who said they discussed his work assignment.
Since then, Bailey said they have unsuccessfully tried to reach each
other by telephone.
In mutual agreement, Bailey has granted Nadeau paid leave until the
school board meets.
The next Lamoille Union District 18 Board meeting is scheduled for
Wednesday evening, August 25, at 6 p.m. at the Lamoille Union High
School library. Mr. Nadeau's work assignment will be discussed.
In the meantime, a group of at least three concerned citizens is
circulating a petition that clearly states the position taken by anyone
who signs it. It reads "We, the undersigned, do not want Wayne Nadeau at
Lamoille Union High School due to his unprofessional conduct and character."
"If the signatures don't appear, then the public doesn't care," said
former teacher and ex-Lamoille Area Vocational Director Dick Cross. He
thought the petition might be collected sometime next week.
