MACC Plans Morrisville Cleanup

by Amy Kolb Noyes

Clean sidewalks and alleyways can make a downtown more welcoming and
pedestrian friendly. Because the Morristown Alliance for Culture and
Commerce's mission involves revitalizing downtown Morrisville, that
business group has decided to pitch in and clean up the village.
The MACC Downtown Cleanup will take place Monday, July 26, beginning at
9 a.m. Partners in the cleanup include the Town of Morristown, which is
donating the use of two dump trucks, and the Lamoille Regional Solid
Waste Management District, which is arranging for rubbish disposal.
Volunteers will be donning MACC t-shirts and taking to the alleys and
walkways of Morrisville and, according to Heather Sargent, they won't
stop until both trucks are full of litter. Sargent came up with the idea
for the cleanup. She said its purpose is two-fold.
"Our whole purpose is to revitalize downtown," Sargent said of MACC. She
said the cleanup will help make the downtown more inviting. MACC members
also hope the cleanup will serve to raise awareness about their group,
especially among downtown business owners. Sargent added the cleanup
will be an annual event as long as it is needed.
MACC holds workshops for business owners during its monthly breakfast
meetings. This month's window display workshop will be held at Power
Play Sports, on Portland Street, at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, July 16. Donna
Stafford will present tips and tricks to create colorful, effective and
inexpensive window displays.
Stafford said her workshop will focus on establishing a theme and using
elements of composition and around-the-shop objects to create
attractive, inexpensive displays.
"You don't even have to go to the supply catalog," said Stafford of the
necessary materials. "You can go to the recycling store."
MACC hopes downtown merchants will take advantage of this workshop in
preparation for the 2004 Community Festival, which will take place July 30.
