I came to the News & Citizen in 1995 with an eclectic journalistic history. I began working for my local community newspaper as a senior in high school. With equal interests in journalism, acting, photography and video production I headed out to Syracuse University to major in broadcast journalism. After four years of learning how to write for television and two internships in television newsrooms, I got my degree. In 1991, I took the next logical step in my career by moving to Lamoille County, Vermont ñ home to zero television stations! That's when I entered the radio business. I worked for WVMX, in Stowe, for a few years. I got my foot in the door through the sales department. By the time I left I was the station's News Director and co-hosting the morning show. Unfortunately, budget cuts due to poor advertising sales led to the elimination of the news department. I should have stayed in sales! I took a couple of jobs in more stable fields over the next two years or so. During that time I also got married and bought my first house. Stability got old after a while, and I decided to go back to covering the news.By this point in time, Lamoille County still had no television stations and no longer had a radio station with a news department. Luckily, there were a few community newspapers kicking around. I spent a year or so freelancing for the Hardwick Gazette before coming to the News & Citizen as a staff writer and photographer. I've picked up a couple of kudos along the way, including two awards in 1999 of which I'm particularly proud. That year, I was honored by my community with the Lamoille County Planning Commission's Jim Marvin Award for Excellence (in my case excellence in reporting). I was also honored by my peers with the Vermont Press Association's award for Best Local Story. Today, I split my time between the News & Citizen, my family (husband and two children), and volunteering for Green Up Vermont. I also do a little writing on the side for publications such as Vermont HomeStyle and Kids VT. I've written a couple of children's stories, but haven't had time to try and get them published. So, if any book publishers are out there reading this, you know where to find me! |
