The Vermont Sports Media Association has selected a Peoples Academy senior soccer player, a Middlebury Union High School junior football player and a University of New Hampshire freshman cross-country runner as its athletes of the month for November.
In statewide balloting, VSMA members chose PA’s Katie Stames as the Female High School Athlete of the Month, Austin Robinson of Middlebury as the Male High School Athlete of the Month, and Elle Purrier of the University of New Hampshire as the Open Division Athlete of the Month. Each was nominated by a VSMA member for outstanding performances in November.
Stames provided senior leadership for the Wolves as they extended the girls’ soccer team’s winning streak to 50 games and completed a Division III state championship three-peat with a 4-1 win over Thetford.
Stames recorded a pair of goals in the final and a goal and an assist in the semifinal vs. BFA-Fairfax. She finished with 35 goals and 23 assists this season on the way to 107 career goals and 57 career assists. Stames was selected to play in the All-America East-West game in North Carolina in December and plans to play soccer at St. Lawrence.
Also nominated for the female high school honor were two Milton senior soccer players, Brooke Phillips and Addison Wennar.
Robinson, a junior quarterback, helped the Middlebury football team to an undefeated season and D-I title with wins in the semifinal and final in November.
Purrier, a Montgomery Center resident, led UNH to the America East championship on November 2 when she finished sixth individually at the league meet in Binghamton, NY.
The three November winners will receive plaques from the VSMA’s sponsor of the organization’s Athlete of the Month program, Initial Ideas of Rutland.
