Howard “Skip” Godfrey, 67, died at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield on Tuesday morning, December 24.
The Morristown native, most recently from Kirby, is reported to have died of natural causes. In 2005 he was sentenced to life in prison for the death of Patricia Scoville in 1991. The case was left unsolved for 14 years, but police held onto DNA evidence from the crime scene. Scoville’s body was found in a shallow grave at Moss Glen Falls days after she had gone missing.
The case grew national attention as the Scoville family pushed for DNA registration. The DNA evidence compared to that on a more recently collected cigarette butt ultimately led police to Godfrey, who maintained his innocence throughout the trial and beyond.
