Eden Central Loses Hartnett

Principal David Hartnett of Eden Central School submitted his resignation to the Eden School Board earlier this month.  The board accepted his resignation at a special meeting on July 12.  Hartnett asked to be released from his contract in order to pursue other possible opportunities and to enable the board to start the search for his replacement.  He indicated in his letter to the board that he would have submitted his letter earlier but circumstances including “wrap-up of the Comprehensive School Wide Reform Grant and the effort to send out the water system retrofit in a timely fashion”, prevented him from doing so. continued on page 2

Little Things That Irk You

I heard a couple of complaints about little things that irked folks this week. First was about construction zones on our roads. Sure, we’re all happy our roads are being repaved, our bridges rebuilt, and so forth, but for the most part these things aren’t ongoing 24 hours a day. So, why don’t the signs on the interstates say get posted with “No work after 5 p.m.” or “No work on weekends” ?  I bet the increased fines for speeding in work zones are valid 24 hours a day! Who are we hurting if we drive through the zones at regular speed with no one there?

Then I’ve heard complaints from folks who were shopping at local retail outlets. It seems that the practice is now for a clerk to take your cash and immediately tuck it away in the register or drop it through a slot in the floor (whatever). But – what happens when you are given back change from a $10 bill instead of from the $20 you handed the clerk? Immediately it’s a you said, I said; I remember, you remember situation. The clerk may look at you disgustedly or  pleadingly hoping you will just accept you got shafted and you will leave. Or maybe the manager gets called.

Of course, the delay in moving on and the line at the register just get longer from there. What happened to training clerks how to make change and count it back? Weren’t you taught to take the bills you are offered in payment and set them, or it, on the cash drawer in plain sight – separate from the other money – until the change has been returned and accepted by the customer? Such a simple process keeps everything and everyone moving along and does not set the customer up against the clerk and the store management. Instead the truth can plainly be observed and there’s no counting of cash drawers or implied lack of trust in the customer.

Yes, those computerized registers are fine, but even they have to be used with common sense. It’s not quite enough just to plug the cash away and snatch out the change it tells you to deliver.
