Out & About participant Mabel Sulham is shown here singing about two equine friends from her childhood: Pete and Charlie. Pete and Charlie were the subject of one of the songs written at an Out & About somgwriting workshop with Jon Gailmor. The first verse goes, "We used to get our groceries; With horses and cart; Pete and Charlie were their names; They walked, they trotted; The food never rotted; When they were
tired; They played their kicking games." Out & About just completed major physical renovations at their building.

Kevin Companion, of Huntington, recently grew this "Best Looking Pumpkin," awarded that title at a show at Gardener's Supply. The paper salesman brought the 714 pound squash on his route last week. We caught up with him on Main Street, in Morrisville. Companion also had the biggest pumpkin at the Champlain Valley Fair this year, weighing in at 1,042. He grows a pumpkin variety called "Dill's Atlantic Giant," developed by Howard Hill in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Companion said he will
carve the giant for Halloween and light it with a 60 watt shop light. He said he will send the seeds back to Nova Scotia "so my hobby pays for itself."Noyes photo

This Hyde Park Elementary School team won the Lamoille North Supervisory Spelling Bee held this week at Lamoille Union Middle School. Hyde Park Spelling Bee Team members are: Daniel Russell, Hunter Brown, Ryan Tallman, Kayla Friedrich, Eliza Fowler and Chelsea Greene. Coaches were Suzanne Harvey-Safford (filling in for Jacinta Fitzgerald) and Erin Neckers. Perfect spellers were Daniel Russell and Ryan Tallman. Perfect spellers receive the Stanley Harvey Award. Stanley Harvey was Daniel Russell's great uncle, so it was nice that he won the award. And, Stanley Harvey was Suzanne Harvey-Safford's husband, who has been deceased for 17 years. This is the fourth year in a row that HPES has won the local competition, over five other schools. They'll head to the regional competition on November 6. This year's scores for all teams were the highest yet and they've been steadily increasing over the past few years. Dave Carey, Middle School guidance counselor, pronounced the words. Over 150 attended the two hour event. Hyde Park will compete on November 11 in the regional contest.
